How to get the darkest mehendi stain

The colour you end up with has far less to do with the henna itself than with what you do once the paste starts to dry. These are the things I tell every bride the night before.

Leave it on longer than you think

Six hours is the minimum. Overnight is better. The dye needs contact time with the skin, and every hour you scrape it off early costs you a shade.

Do not wash it off with water

Scrape the dried paste off gently with the back of a spoon or a blunt knife. Water in the first twelve hours stops the oxidation that turns the stain from orange to deep maroon.

Warmth deepens it

Sit near a warm stove for a few minutes, or wrap your hands. Heat opens the skin and pulls the dye deeper. This is the single most effective trick, and the one most people skip.

Seal with oil, not lotion

A little mustard or coconut oil after scraping protects the design. Water-based lotions do the opposite.

Follow those four and your colour will keep deepening for two full days before it peaks.
